Bone broth for weight loss
It’s been soooo long since I’ve posted on my website that this one is truly an experiment to see if I am still capable.
Like most things which we do for a while and then stop doing, blogging fell to the wayside because life got in the way… work, relationships, financial obligations, dreams… ok, that last one did not get in the way, but I’ve been trying different avenues to make my dreams come true.
Now I’m back where I started, well kinda, because where I feel I truly started on my path, is when I joined a gym in 1985 and was, shortly thereafter, encouraged by my French teacher, Monsieur Moyer, to join the powerlifting team. I was the first female powerlifter in my high school.
From there, I worked in a gym post high school and began competing in body building, which lead me to choose nutrition as my career path because I figured that everyone needs to know how to eat, but not everyone is willing to exercise. Turns out though, that of the two, exercise is my favorite, and food is merely fuel to get me through and to my next workout.
But at some point in the beginning, I took a class called Nutrition & Communication and I learned that TV was a great way to get your nutrition message heard.
While in high school, I wanted to be an actress, but my parents did not support my decision to study acting. They actually didn’t want me to go to college at all. But once I learned that I could combine TV with nutrition, having a nutrition oriented TV show became my life goal.
While in college, at Penn State University, I didn’t even have a computer. And when I did have access to one, via the computer lab after I got off work at midnight, the computers where all DOS based, no PC’s or Mac’s back then.
And here I am, 31 years later, typing my blog post, using my iPhone and a wireless keyboard. Its actually quite astounding when I think about it.
And yet, after all these years, I’m still using the same type of pillow lap desk i used in college and I’m STILL chasing my dream… that nutrition related TV show / healthy lifestyle cooking show… or something like that.
The point of all of this, in relation to my BROTH post, is that, while chasing a dream and refusing to live a “normal” life of marriage, children, and a house; along the way, my income has varied, up and down, more so because I love to buy shoes and other high end fashion, then because I cannot earn a decent living. Being a Dietitian is a wonderful career which pays well.
But because my means and ends change, and I’ve a moved around quite a bit in pursuit of my dreams, I’ve learned to feed myself well on pennies a day.
The following article and video, are just one example of my frugal foodie ways.
I’ve vacillated over the years as to how to share my frugal foodie messages, but a a friend encouraged my plight and said, “It’s always a good idea to learn to live “poor” / frugally, so you don’t squander your money once you have it.”
When it comes to dieting and weight loss, I’m not a fan of either. I believe in eating for health’s sake and exercising most days and whatever weight your body likes in conjunction with those healthy habits, that’s the weight you are meant to have.
But since “BONE BROTH” diets are such a fad, and since I’m so good at making broth from scraps of food, and since I made this quick little IG stories video a while back, I just thought I’d share some pearls… without further ado…
Here’s your BROTH diet… and it’s F’n FREE!!!
Sorry, I’m NOT a fan of fad diets when, as an EXPERT / REGISTERED DIETITIAN & CERTIFIED HOLISTIC CHEF, we KNOW that CONSISTENCY & PATIENCE pay off… but AT LEAST, if you WANT to try a fad diet based on broth, at the very least, try making your own BROTH for FREE!! And who doesn’t like FREE??!!
•
Well, actually, I don’t. Because you don’t get ANYTHING in life without some hard work.
•
And technically, you PAID for these vegetables 🌶 🌽 🍅 🍄 initially and hopefully made some SUPER NUTRITIOUS YUMMY DISHES…
•
and now I’m just asking you to save the SCRAPS & make BROTH out of something you would have discarded ANYWAY…
•
1️⃣ Freeze any, & ALL vegetable (even FRUIT) peels, cores, stems, BONES, whatever you would consider throwing away, don’t. Instead, freeze it in a container or baggie. And when you have a nice pile, pull out your oven safe DUTCH oven or Doufeu from Le Creuset
2️⃣ Set on a burner on medium high to high heat. Melt butter from grass fed cows, or use oil of your choice
3️⃣ Add sea salt & freshly ground black pepper & seasonings of your choice.
4️⃣ BROWN the HECK out of your vegetable scraps. Even go so far as to caramelize them. This makes for a bomb 💣 ass flavor.
5️⃣ Add water. FILL to the TOP!
6️⃣ Bring to a boil.
7️⃣ Simmer for 10-20 minutes.
Depending on your availability
8️⃣ Place lid on top & set in an oven at 250 F / 121 C.
9️⃣ Set timer ⏲ for 4-8 hours.
Depending on your time constraints.
🔟 Strain the broth with a colander & a fine sieve, if you have one.
1️⃣1️⃣ ENJOY your BROTH DIET, or make yummy SOUP 🍲 or use the broth to sauté veggies or to cook grains or beans from scratch!
Instead of using plain old water.
Why not hydrate your dry grains & legumes with this NUTRIENT RICH broth made from stuff you would’ve thrown away otherwise.
Use within 5 days or freeze the broth. Label & date & save for future use up to 3 months later.
YOU’re WELCOME!!! 🥰❤️🏋️♀️💪
