Hey, It’s the Watermelon Show!

My friend Tom, well, actually, friend / cameraman/ video editor/ “Elizabeth” editor, was the inspiration for my watermelon 🍉 spiels dating back to Fall of 2008 when I wrote my first ode to watermelon after hearing of how Tom’s Qigong instructor dispenses watermelon to all of his students after each class.

I thought this was an intriguing choice since watermelon is very seasonal: June through September, even here in SoCal.

Around the same time I also read an article about how a Watermelon Eating Dog Caused a Man to Stab Himself. I’m not even kidding. To this day, I have trouble wrapping my brain around that one. I’m thinking the original author either had trouble conveying the message about the watermelon and dog connection, or else, this was one mind altering dog we had on our hands.

Frankly, I can’t judge the author, I had an editor for my articles, and Tom serves as my verbiage editor, but this time around, the watermelon video was a last minute shoot and pretty off-the-cuff, hence the slip ups, ums, and so’s. But I just look at everything I do in life as practice for something bigger and better, or else, just practice.

In case you’re interested in the watermelon-eating-dog article, here’s the link to that article which was originally published in the Santa Monica Daily Press newspaper, October 4, 2008.

And as I’m beginning to hit a wall, I found another article I wrote for the same newspaper in August 2011.

https://thekitchenvixen.com/2011/08/watermelon-season-is-ending-whats-girl.html

This article contains a version of my smoothie recipe, but instead of garbanzo beans, I used protein powder. Probably a more acceptable protein source, but hey, i was throwing oats into my protein shakes when I worked at Rodale Press, Men’s Health Book division in 1996. They all through I was weird back then, and now everyone’s doing it. I’m just saying…

Watermelon, garbanzo bean smoothies.

Watermelon marinade.

Watermelon salsa.

Pickled & fermented watermelon rind.

Watermelon & olive oil sun damage protector.

Just give ‘em all a try, once watermelon season is back… I bought a watermelon yesterday at the Santa Monica Co-op. I know that we are so fortunate to have a plethora of seasonal produce here in SoCal.

I’ll post the complete recipes soon…

but my eyes are closing and I’ve got to workout in the AM.

Visits my Instagram stories to see my daily workouts…

Sincerely,

Elizabeth
